Martlesham Community Responders is a St John Ambulance affiliated unit which has been formed to provide a first response to 999 calls received by the East of England Ambulance NHS Trust from the Martlesham, Martlesham Heath, Waldringfield, Newbourne and Brightwell community in Suffolk. Our aim is to provide first aid and resuscitation skills until the arrival of an emergency ambulance.
The scheme works in partnership with the Adastral Park Emergency Services, who provide cover using their first aid response team during working hours (Monday to Friday, 08:00 to 17:00); the Martlesham Community Responders providing cover at all other times.
The scheme went "live" on New Years Eve (31st December) 2003, and now we are responding to about 10 - 12 calls per month thoughout the Martlesham area.
Currently the scheme is being covered by 5 responders (Andy Oxborrow, Johnny Dixon, Paul Stockdale, Paul Whitby and Christie Drake). We do try to ensure that at least one of us is on duty at all times, although this is not always possible since there are only the 5 of us, and we do all live busy lives and have other commitments (we do have families - four of us have small children), which can occasionally limit our ability to respond.
How are we funded?
Why are Community Responders so important?
Can you help us?
