Dodgy Doorstep Callers Martlesham Heath

Email message recieved from the Police Direct Notifications system about a suspected bogus builder in Martlesham Heath on Monday 2nd November.

Email reads as follows.

Police are reminding residents to be cautious when dealing with doorstep callers after a 78-year-old woman was approached by a man offering to fix tiles on her roof on Monday, 2 November.

The woman answered a knock at the door of her Martlesham Heath home around 11am and found a man, described as white with a fair complexion, in his 40s, of large build and quite tall, with not a lot of hair and wearing a blue sweatshirt with writing on, on her doorstep.

He told her that her roof tiles needed redoing and then quoted a price to carry out the work but said it would be cheaper for cash. He then offered to drive her to the bank to take out cash to pay. The woman wisely declined and said she would speak to a family member. The man left but returned ten minutes later to ask is she had spoken to her relative.

The 78-year-old then declined the offer to do the work and the man left. A white van with two other occupants in was seen outside the address at the time the man visited.

Police are urging residents to be careful when dealing with any unknown callers and, if you are considering having work done on your property, to always get several quotes from reliable companies before agreeing to have any work completed.
